Birds, Passeriformes, perching birds or passerines. More than half of the worlds bird species belong to this order, the perching birds. This order of over 5000 species includes many familiar backyard birds such as crows, myna, and sparrows.
These perching birds are characterized by a beak with no silk, leg covered with small scales and feet having three toes in front opposed by one well-developed toe behind. They are present everywhere. Most are small or medium-sized birds, the largest species are the raven. They are very vocal, singing birds. The male is often more brightly coloured than the female. Most are opportunistic feeders, being dependent on high-energy foods such as seeds and insects. Monogamy is the norm. |
